“Cost-burdened” households and renters make up the vast majority of Allentown. They are struggling to remain in their households due to the steep increase in rent that only continues to rise. Over 30% of their annual income goes towards housing costs, including rent and maintenance. This leaves little funding left over for any unforeseen emergencies that may arise. According to the 2030 Allentown report, large families are forced to live in two-bedroom apartments with little to no privacy.

In the midst of the housing crisis, Allentown is taking large strides in helping the city thrive and live up to its potential. The bustling city wants not only to improve the quantity of housing, but to improve the overall quality of housing. Attaining a home has become a challenge, so Allentown officials are working together to encourage homeownership and guide people on the path to becoming homeowners. Settling down and establishing roots in a city that many love allows the homeowners to become a permanent part of their ever-growing community. Being wrapped in the historic legacy and diverse cultures that infiltrate every block helps homeowners grow alongside their neighbors and city.

And with Allentown’s 2030 plan, hopefully that will no longer be an issue. The city is working to rewrite zoning laws and provide incentives for property developers to build affordable housing. It is their hope that with these revisions there will be an increase in low income housing in the form of apartments or townhomes where multiple families can live.
